What can I do to resolve
unpaid fines and fees?

  • Any payments, even in a small amount, can help get you closer to compliance.

  • Ask the court clerk if it is possible to set up a payment plan so that you can begin making payments toward your debt.

  • Some, but not all, warrant clearing events may provide the option to pay fines and fees, get on a payment plan, or get assistance from an attorney in an out-of-court environment. Contact the host court or agency to determine if you can deal with costs at the event.

  • Contact the court clerk and request a cost hearing. You have the right to request a cost hearing. You may also contact Cost Administration at the court to add you to the Cost Docket.

    • At a cost hearing, you or an attorney may present evidence that shows the judge proof of your inability to pay. This may include proof of low income and receipt of government benefits such as food stamps, housing vouchers, disability income, and WIC.

    • Cost hearings can sometimes lead to a reduction or even elimination of the fines and fees you may owe.
